Meeting Review: Don Wright, AVL North America, Friday, August 6, 2004 at 11:15AM
AGENDA
Brief Introductions
Don Wright, Jim Ross, John Iras
Brief understanding of AVL North America operations and current support for K-12 outreach.
AVL North America supports a U.S. FIRST Robotics Team from Huron High School Team 830 in Ann Arbor. They have designated a Test Lab Facility at their Manufacturing Laboratory to act as a space for team development in Ann Arbor. Don is an ardent and passionate advocate of this program and works with the team members directly. When asked if AVL was interested in expanding their current efforts, with out hesitation he confirmed they were very interested. Additionally, Don Manville. President of AVL is extremely supportive of this program and knows Dean Keman personally. He was also involved with the development of the Seguay Project prior to coming to AVL.
Discussion of the current state of affairs regarding OSMTech past, present, future.
Don was somewhat aware of the situation (Documents were provided for later review).
U.S. FIRST Robotics Program
Don was aware of the OSMTech and the FIRST Team and has met Kyle Hughes in the past and recognizes their past accomplishments.
Automation Alley Relationship Development
Don was intrigued by the efforts to date and the synergy it may represent for future expansion of our collaborative efforts.
Discussion of Granholm efforts on behalf of advanced manufacturing and the elements of change necessary for our states 21st Century success. (K-12 educational developments).
This dove-tailed nicely into our discussions regarding future opportunities.
Possible scenarios for partnership and/or supporting efforts by AVL for OSTMtech, U.S. FIRST Robotics.
We discussed several possibilities for collaboration and relationship developments to include some technological networked opportunities. The technology infrastructure is already in place and being used in their day to day operations in the real world.
NSF Grant Initiative 2004 / Oakland Schools / Observatory / OSMTech
We reviewed this possibility and what it may add to our continued efforts on behalf of OSMTech & U.S. FIRST and AVL, Automation Alley, etc.
Summary.
We all agreed that this relationship was something that was worth pursuing. And that we should move in a timely fashion.
Next Steps.
Don will take the materials provided and develop a follow-on memo for Don Manville to review. He will attempt to schedule a meeting with Don Manville for us to meet and further discuss the various collaborative opportunities. He will follow-up with us ASAP.
Adjourn.
In the world of it is a very small world indeed..............it appears they work with Kinsler Fuel Injection (Observatory benefactor Jim Kinsler) on various projects with NASCar and other speed racing efforts. This could prove to be providential. But that is another story.
Hope all finds you well.
I will also be providing copies of appropriate documents for Don to substantiate various positions, history, etc.
Let me know what your thoughts might be.
Best,
Jim
